The University of Chester is a public university located in Chester, England. It was established in the year 1839 as the UK's first purpose-built teacher training college which later became the University of Chester. It is considered to be the fifth oldest higher education founded in England, with only the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Durham and London antedating it. It is a member of AACSB, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the Cathedrals Group, the North West Universities Association and Universities UK. It is honored with the Silver Award in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF 2017).
The University of Chester is committed to ensuring an outstanding student learning experience, developing the expertise of staff, providing teaching excellence, and actively growing research and scholarship. It has over 20,000 students drawn from the UK, Europe and other 130 countries of the globe. It offers an array of foundation, bachelors and master’s courses along with academic research programs. Its MPhil and PhD qualifications being conventional and herding area of activity, it procured the powers to award its own research degrees in 2007. It is involved in remarkable projects like helping to develop England’s first ‘carbon neutral’ village, discovering a vitamin compound which reduces the risk of heart disease and dementia, translating the Bible into British Sign Language, and research into understanding the psychological impact of cancer to improve wellbeing and quality of life for patients and their families. It has a selective admission policy based on academic record and grades. The admission rate ranges from 20-30% making it a very selective institution. Apart from offering a range of academic facilities, the university has several other facilities including a swimming pool, sports hall, fitness center, bookshop, science and language laboratories, scholarships, study abroad and exchange programs, online courses and distance learning opportunities, as well as administrative services and a bank. All campuses are well-equipped with an environment that is considered ideal for learning. The first year and overseas students are also provided with accommodation which consists of halls of residence and houses nearby.
