The University of Newcastle also informally known as Newcastle University was established in 1965. It is located in Callaghan, a suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales. It has been ranked among the top 200 universities in the world by QS World University Rankings.
The University of Newcastle is dedicated to promoting diversity and widening participation in the focus areas including inclusive leadership, gender equity, indigenous advancement, cultural diversity and belonging, accessibility and inclusion and LGBTIQ+ inclusion. It is awarded with maximum rating, a 5 star for social equity (The Good Universities Guide 2022). It is also ranked 1st in the sector for number of Aboriginal and Torres Islander students (Department of Education, Skills and Employment Student Statistics 2019). There were 37,946 student enrollment in the year 2019 out of which 30,547 were domestic and 7399 were international students from over 120 different nationalities (The University of Newcastle Annual Report 2019). It has been ranked one of the top regional universities in Australia (QS World University Ranking 2021). UON offers a variety of accommodation facilities for students across its nine residential halls close to the main campuses.
