University of Southern Maine is a public university that was established in 1878 and is located in three locations: Portland, Gorham and Lewiston. Gorham Normal School and Portland University, two different state universities, were its original founders. In order to improve the efficiency of the public university system in Maine, the two institutions—later known as Gorham State College and the University of Maine at Portland—were combined in 1970. Later, in 1988, the Lewiston campus was added. USM occupies 142 acres of land, built for both academic and non-academic purposes.
